You encounter the right (his (her?) left) half of a child.
"0.42, acthually," xe lisps. "The average family hath 0.42 children nowadayth, so I'm the 0.42."
"I uthed to be 0.58, but the birth rate decreathed. Now I haven't a bellybutton or a nothe, or anything elthe that goeth in the middle." Xe looks glum. "And it'th hard to talk without the tip of my tongue."
Xe looks excited to talk about it. "Everyone I know ith mean. I'd like a friend to play with. Could you tell me a bit about the *average* member of your team? If you do, I'll do my betht to help you on puzzleth anytime, an average of 1.87 timeth." They smile shyly. "Though I think you're above average, tho I'll pitch in an extra 0.13."

You can spend a hint anytime to get help on any non-meta puzzle, in one of three kinds:
To ask for a hint, email 2018caltechpuzzlehunt@gmail.com with "HINT REQUEST" (and any additional info) as the subject line. In your email body, include your team name, the token, the puzzle name and the hint category. If you are asking for category 2, please tell us what you have done so far and include up to five clues you would like us to answer for you. If you are on the wrong track, we will give you hint 1 instead.
You do not need to ask for two puzzles at the same time. The second time you ask for a hint, simply refer to this task that you have already completed.
If you're on campus, you can swing by HQ and we're likely to give you a much bigger hint!
